The 10 Largest Fast-Food Chains in America in 2026

Fast food is a North American institution, but just how dominant are the biggest players? According to QSR Magazine’s annual QSR 50 report, the industry’s most authoritative ranking of quick-service chains by U.S. systemwide sales — a handful of brands absolutely dwarf the competition. Here’s how the top 10 stacked up heading into 2026.

1. McDonald’s No surprise at the top. McDonald’s led the QSR 50 with $53.5 billion in U.S. systemwide sales a position it has held for more than two decades. The chain leaned heavily into value in 2024, and its massive footprint of over 13,500 U.S. locations shows no signs of slowing down.

2. Starbucks The world’s biggest coffee chain is also one of fast food’s biggest earners. Starbucks opened an industry-best 589 stores in 2024 cementing its position well ahead of the competition in the #2 slot despite a turbulent year of internal restructuring.

3. Chick-fil-A Remarkable considering it’s closed on Sundays. Chick-fil-A reached $22.7 billion in systemwide sales and grew its total unit count by 145 restaurants all while posting the highest average unit volume of any chain on the list. Its ambitions are going global, with major expansion plans underway in the U.K. and Asia.

4. Taco Bell the Mexican-inspired chain is quietly one of fast food’s most profitable businesses. Taco Bell achieved a record $1 billion in profit in 2024 and has aggressive growth targets through 2030, aiming to double menu innovation and dramatically boost digital sales.

5. Dunkin’ America runs on Dunkin’ and the numbers back it up. The coffee-and-baked-goods chain holds a firm fifth place, buoyed by loyal morning commuters and a robust loyalty app that keeps customers coming back daily.

6. Wendy’s The square-burger chain remains a top-tier player despite a challenging year. Wendy’s plans to open 1,000 net new restaurants globally by 2028, with a focus on its energy-efficient “Global Next Gen” restaurant design and capturing younger, high-frequency diners.

7. Burger King The self-proclaimed Home of the Whopper rounds out the big three burger chains. Burger King has invested heavily in restaurant remodels and digital ordering in recent years, working to close the gap with McDonald’s and Wendy’s in the value wars.

8. Chipotle The fast-casual giant is the highest-ranked chain that doesn’t have a drive-thru at most locations — though its “Chipotlane” digital pickup lanes are changing that fast. Chipotle’s focus on real ingredients and customization continues to resonate with younger diners.

9. Subway Once the largest chain in the world by location count, Subway has been on a deliberate downsizing path, closing underperforming stores while refreshing its menu and brand. It still ranks among the top 10 by revenue, a testament to its enduring reach.

10. Domino’s Pizza delivery’s undisputed king closes out the top 10. Domino’s built its empire on logistics as much as food — its tech-forward ordering system and relentless delivery innovation have made it a case study in how fast food can evolve beyond the counter.

Why is Starbucks even on a list for “fast food” places? Just because they have way overpriced coffee and coffee derivatives, does not mean they are a fast food establishment. .
