Is It Perimenopause—or Something More?

Is It Perimenopause—or Something More?

Hot flashes, mood swings, trouble sleeping—perimenopause is no picnic. But some symptoms that seem hormonal could also point to underlying conditions that deserve a closer look.

Perimenopause 101

Perimenopause is the transition period before menopause, usually starting in your 40s (sometimes earlier). Estrogen and progesterone levels begin to fluctuate, and that hormonal rollercoaster can trigger symptoms like:

  • Irregular periods
  • Night sweats
  • Fatigue
  • Brain fog
  • Anxiety or depression

But here’s the tricky part: many chronic conditions—thyroid disease, autoimmune issues, even vitamin deficiencies—can look just like perimenopause.

When to Look Deeper

If your symptoms:

  • Began suddenly or severely
  • Seem extreme for your age
  • Involve weight gain/loss, palpitations, or hair thinning
  • Don’t respond to basic hormone balancing

…then it’s worth screening for things like hypothyroidism, anemia, adrenal fatigue, or perimenopause-triggered autoimmune flares (like lupus or Hashimoto’s).

Testing Options

Ask your doctor about:

  • Hormone panel (FSH, estradiol, progesterone)
  • Thyroid panel (TSH, T3, T4)
  • Ferritin and vitamin B12/D levels

You can also track symptoms using apps like MyFlo or Clue to see if there’s a pattern.

Relief Options—Whatever the Cause

  • Adaptogens like ashwagandha or maca
  • Bioidentical hormone therapy (with medical guidance)
  • Regular movement (yoga and walking are gentle but effective)
  • Omega-3s and magnesium to support mood and sleep

Don’t Brush It Off

Just because you’re in your 40s doesn’t mean all health issues boil down to hormones. Rule out other causes so you can feel your best through the transition.
