Actor James Van Der Beek is opening up about how cancer has changed his life—and how healing isn’t as simple as people might think.
During a recent interview, Van Der Beek shared that cancer has affected nearly every part of his daily life. He called the recovery process “a full-time job” and said it’s something that might never truly be over.
“This might be a process for the rest of my life,” he said.
Van Der Beek explained that the journey hasn’t just been physical—it’s also been emotional. Some days are filled with laughter and good moments, but other days feel heavy, and that’s something he’s learned to accept.
His wife, actress Kimberly Van Der Beek, has supported him through it all. Like many couples facing a health crisis, they’ve leaned on each other during tough times.
“Sometimes we’re just out having fun,” he shared. “And other times, I just need to sit and cry. And she’s there, asking, ‘What can I do for you?’”
Van Der Beek also talked about the emotional ups and downs that come with healing. He believes it’s important not to pretend everything is okay when it isn’t.
“You have to allow yourself to spiral sometimes,” he said. “You can’t bottle it up. The healing journey is full of highs and lows—and that’s constant. There’s no finish line.”
His words are a reminder that cancer doesn’t just end when treatment does. For many survivors, the emotional and mental recovery lasts much longer.
Van Der Beek is best known for his role in Dawson’s Creek, but his recent honesty is helping fans see him in a new light—as someone who’s facing life’s hardest moments with openness and strength.
As more celebrities speak up about their personal experiences with cancer, stories like his are helping others feel less alone in their own journeys.
